Giuseppe Rossi faces one-year ban after testing positive for banned substance

Former Man United Striker Set To Face Trial After Failing Doping Test

Rossi, 31, tested positive for a substance which, in certain cases - and only with official consent - may still be taken, in a random doping test following Genoa's 1-0 defeat to Benevento on May 12.

Rossi, who made 14 appearances for the Red Devils between 2004 and 2007, could face a year out of the game if found guilty by Italy's anti-doping agency, Nado Italia.

Dorzolamyde is a substance usually found in anti-glaucoma medication, but according to Gazetta dello Sport Rossi has denied ever taking eye drops.

The trial is scheduled for October 1 and until then the ex-Italy worldwide striker - who is now a free agent - has not been suspended.

After joining in December past year, Rossi played only nine games for Genoa, scoring one goal.

After starting his career with United, Rossi had loan spells with Newcastle and Parma before being transferred to Spanish side Villarreal - where he stayed for six seasons.

He returned to Italy to play for Fiorentina, but was loaned twice to Spain - spending time at Levante and Celta Vigo.

The 31-year-old Rossi, formerly of Manchester United and Fiorentina but now without a club, has denied using eye drops, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport daily.

Just a few months later, the New Jersey native suffered the second of three cruciate knee ligament injuries in his career.
