Google still allowing third-party apps read your Gmail

Google says app developers can still scan Gmail with opt-in

In a letter to United States senators Susan Molinari, Google's vice president for public policy in the Americas admitted that it lets app developers access the inboxes of millions of users - even though Google itself stopped looking in 2017. The company also disclosed that app developers generally are free to share the.

Marc Rotenberg, president of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, told the Journal there was "simply no way that Gmail users could imagine that their personal data would be transferred to third parties", and the revelation showed that the "privacy policy model is simply broken beyond fix".

Last year, Google made a big thing of announcing that it would no longer scan people's Gmail emails for keywords that could be used to target ads at them.

Her letter refrains from answering specifics over how app developers can share Gmail user data to third parties.

Before a published, non-Google app can access your Gmail messages, it goes through a multi-step review process at the company, it said.

According to Google, it gives both enterprise admins and individual consumers transparency and control over how their data is used.

If an app is found to have violated Google's terms, it will display an "unverified app" warning on it.

To educate users, Google will serve up warnings when a third-party app is installed that'll indicate what data it seeks to obtain from your Gmail inbox, and if the app has been verified. "In some cases, employees at these app companies have read people's actual emails in order to improve their software algorithms".

She also said Google restricts this type of access to a "very limited number of individuals", requires documentation of when access is granted, and routinely audits access.

Senators may seek further clarity on Gmail's operations at a Commerce Committee hearing about privacy practices scheduled for September 26 with officials from Google, Apple Inc, AT&T Inc and Twitter Inc.

Google says it doesn't get paid for giving third-party apps access to Gmail and checks them thoroughly.

If you trust Google, this is the second-factor security key for you. That suspension happens before any user data has been accessed in the "majority" of situations, apparently. You can already disable the feature on mobile right now by heading to the settings for your account and turning off "Smart Replies".
