[H]ardOCP: Google Can Now Turn Off Teens' Phones

Sarah Tew CNET

Google introduced the Family Link app, a digital health monitoring system for parents to monitor their kids' usage, previous year but was designed for kids under the age of 13.

While the service became available on Chromebooks in April, users can now manage website restrictions and account settings for their children and teens from the device, and will soon be able to set screen time limits and manage the apps they allow their children to use on Chromebooks. "This week, parents around the world will be able to use Family Link to supervise their teen's existing Google Account for the first time", said Paulo Golgher, director, Kids and Families, Google, in a blog post.

A new Android app from Google just hit the Google Play Store: Google Hire, which is associated with Google's Hire feature within the G Suite. However, the new update extends those controls to teenagers. The listing talks about the service and is developed by Google LLC. The app which was available in the USA until now has been launched today globally in countries including India.

Up until now, the app was created to help control the smartphone habits of children 13 and under.

Our favourite feature is if a child asks Google Assistant to scan the room for monsters, it will play appropriate scanning sound effects before announcing the all clear.

A study published last year by think-tank DQ Institute and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) found that 12-year-olds in Singapore spent over 6½ hours daily before a screen, with 70 per cent of them owning a mobile device.

It also plans to integrate it with Google Assistant, which would allow parents to use voice commands to lock, locate their kid's device.

The app, which links to Google accounts, allows parents to monitor their children's activities.
