Hundreds rescued from flooding in historic NC city

Hurricane Florence Could Kill 'A Lot Of People' As It Batters US Coast

Heavy flooding is expected, with a storm surge up to 13ft (4 metres) in the area stretching from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout, North Carolina.

National Weather Service forecaster Brandon Locklear predicted Florence would drop up to eight months' worth of rain in two or three days. The Category 1 storm has maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour and is moving slowly, at 6 miles per hour.

"Cameras outside the International Space Station captured views of Hurricane Florence on September 14 at 7:41 a.m. EDT minutes after the storm made landfall near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina packing winds of 90 miles an hour", NASA said in a video description.

Cooper said Florence was set to cover nearly all of North Carolina in several feet of water.

Operations at the ports of Wilmington, Charleston, South Carolina, and Norfolk in Virginia, which together handled 23 per cent of East Coast imports in 2017, have been disrupted by the storm. A 78-year-old man was electrocuted attempting to connect extension cords while another man perished when he was blown down by high winds while checking on his hunting dogs, a county spokesman said.

Residents at Trent Court Apartments wait out the weather as rising waters get closer to their doors. Significant weakening is expected over the weekend.

"I about jumped out of my skin", he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Friday morning. According to Fire Chief Glen Rogers, there are in fact only 12 people left on the beach to sit out the storm.

A North Carolina city says about 70 people have been rescued from a hotel whose structural integrity is being threatened by Hurricane Florence.

Crews from the city and the Federal Emergency Management Agency were working with citizen volunteers to get people to dry ground, Roberts said.

The hurricane center predicts as much as 101 centimeters (40 inches) of rain for some parts of North Carolina.

After landfall, Florence slowed to a pace that meant it would plague the area with days of flooding.

Coastal streets flowed with ocean water, and more than 460,000 homes and businesses were without power, mostly in North Carolina, according to poweroutage.us, which tracks the nation's electrical grid. It's expected to move slowly over eastern SC on Friday night through Saturday night.

Florence had been a Category 3 hurricane with 120 miles per hour winds on Thursday but dropped to Category 1 before coming ashore.

The hurricane was seen as a major test for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was heavily criticized as slow and unprepared for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico a year ago.

Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) but authorities warned the danger was far from over.

In Jacksonville, North Carolina, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door-to-door to pull dozens of people out of the Triangle Motor Inn after the structure began to crumble and the roof started to collapse.

"I feel like the dumbest human being who ever walked the face of the earth", Ballance said.

Parts of North and SC were forecast to get as much as one metre of rain.
