Hurricane Florence: South Carolina vs. Marshall matchup canceled due to storm

North Carolina's wild horses know how to survive hurricane

President Donald Trump both touted the government's readiness and urged people to get out of the way.

"Don't play games with it".

Hurricane Florence, now a Category 2 storm, is slowly approaching the US coast, and the storm's massive fury is on full display in video footage taken from the International Space Station.

Tim Bowen said nearby cities like Kinston and Goldsboro are more inland, but have a history of severe flooding and the situation might be even worse for evacuees.

"Some say North Carolina is getting a break, but we are on the wrong side of this story", he said.

As of 11 p.m. ET Wednesday, the storm was centred 455 kilometres east-southeast of Wilmington, N.C., moving northwest at 28 km/h.

Bleak warning issued as Hurricane Florence heads for the US. But that was out in the open ocean, where deeper water means bigger waves.

Coastal towns up and down the Carolina coast are nearly completely deserted. Closer to central North Carolina, Fayetteville could see winds of 27 miles per hour. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland.

Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters said Florence eventually could strike as merely a Category 1 hurricane with winds less than 160 km/h, but that's still enough to cause at least $1 billion in damage.

"For a meandering storm, the biggest concern - as we saw with Harvey - is the huge amount of rainfall", said Chris Landsea, chief of tropical analysis and forecast branch at the National Hurricane Center.

Large and risky, Hurricane Florence is drawing closer to the coast of the Carolinas, where it threatens to become the most intense storm to strike the region in at least 25 years, since Hugo. Most other beachgoers were long done.

"Its been really nice", Nicole Roland said. "Also, a little creepy". "If they're telling you to leave, you have to leave", Graham said. Airlines cancelled almost 1000 flights and counting.

Even miles away from the Atlantic, North Carolina residents in low-lying areas are boarding up and emptying stores.

"This morning I drove around for an hour looking for gas in Cary".

Roslyn Fleming, 56, said her granddaughter was baptized in the inlet near where she lives in the coastal community of Sea Breeze and on Thursday morning she used her iPad to make a video of the scene. The more the Great Lakes one wins, the more southerly Florence will be. Damaging effects from the storm are expected to be felt far inland, particularly as it's projected to stall once it crosses the coastline. Forecasters also were tracking two other disturbances.

A hurricane's numerical classification tends to dominate the headlines, but it tells only part of the story - it rates a storm's wind speeds - and not necessarily the most life-threatening part. The Navy, Air Force and Army were moving ships and aircraft out of harm's way. Florence's heavy rains could cause an environmental disaster if waste from hog manure pits, coal ash dumps and other industrial sites wash into homes or threaten drinking water supplies.

Hurricane Isaac is now moving through the western tropical Atlantic Ocean but will likely bring heavy rain and damaging winds to parts of the Lesser Antilles later this week.

"You have water coming onshore and you can rainfall coming down that's trying to move out", he said.
