‘I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone’

Brett Kavanaugh

The White House said in a statement that it stands firmly behind him.

However, with elections approaching, Kavanaugh's rejection would give Republicans little time to select a new nominee for confirmation before the end of December, when the current Senate session ends.

Republicans, with a 51-49 Senate majority, can confirm Kavanaugh if they stay united.

In response to the New Yorker's scoop, The Times reported that the magazine never confirmed "with other eyewitnesses" that Kavanaugh attended a Yale University dorm party where Ramirez claims he drunkenly exposed himself.

Senate Republicans have been largely indifferent to or skeptical of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who was the first person to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

The new accusation landed late Sunday hours after negotiators reached an agreement to hold a public hearing Thursday for Kavanaugh and his first accuser, California college professor Christine Blasey (BLAH'-zee) Ford, who says he sexually assaulted her at a party decades ago. I am not questioning and have not questioned that perhaps Dr. Ford at some point in her life was sexually assaulted by someone in some place.

"Yes there were parties, and the drinking age was 18", he acknowledged later, referring to his high school years. But the judge said he never drank so much that he could not recall what happened while he was intoxicated.

The New Yorker published the claim from the second accuser, Deborah Ramirez, on September 23.

Democrats are likely to question Kavanaugh about his drinking habits and social conduct - open-ended questions that people close to him say he plans to avoid answering, but that will be hard to deflect.

Mr Kavanaugh referenced a letter signed by dozens of women he knew in high school which defended the judge, saying "listen to the people who know me best".

Additionally, Michael Avenatti, the attorney for Stormy Daniels, claims he has evidence Kavanaugh participated in multiple gang rapes in high school.

Brett Kavanaugh, left, looks at his wife Ashley Estes Kavanaugh as they answer questions during a FOX News interview, Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, in Washington, about allegations of sexual misconduct against the Supreme Court nominee.

Kavanaugh argues that no witnesses have yet come forward to corroborate either woman's account. "If you're familiar what what statist propaganda organizations normally do, however, this is what they normally do".

Confirmation of the federal appeals court judge to the lifetime job would cement conservative control of the Supreme Court and advance Trump's goal of moving the high court and the broader federal judiciary to the right. "Or customary morning show interview?" It's a theme he returned to in the Fox News interview.

"There's a huge difference between Sotomayor on Sesame Street or Scalia on 60 Minutes and this, of course".

Kavanaugh denied the allegation under oath and under penalty of felony shortly after the accusation was made public.

Still, the White House and Republicans have cast doubt on Ford's allegations. Bill Shine approved, check.

Margaret Sullivan, the influential media columnist of the Washington Post, lamented on Twitter before the interview was aired that it "promises to be a challenge-free infomercial".

Certainly, some of the questions posed were so empathetic towards the Kavanaughs that they bordered on softball.

"Roger is such a terrific boss".

When a reporter pressed the Utah Republican to explain how he knew the allegation was "phony", Hatch simply said, "Because I know it is, that's why".

For Democrats, the row is a golden opportunity to build on anger among female voters at Trump's often dismissive attitude to allegations of sexual misconduct - including against the president himself.
