The foreign ministers of the arch-rivals - Shah Mahmood Qureshi and India's Sushma Swaraj - will hold a rare meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly underway in NY, officials in New Delhi and Islamabad said Thursday.
The Minister of State for External Affairs Gen VK Singh has in last few days slammed Imran Khan regime saying it was "propped" up by the Pakistan army and nothing has changed in that country.
Pakistan wants stability and peace in the region, the foreign minister said.
Kumar said India's decision to agree to Pakistan's proposal for the meeting was in response to the spirit reflected in separate letters from Khan and Qureshi.
Asked whether the foreign ministers meeting in NY is the beginning of a dialogue process, he merely repeated that they requested for a meeting and we have not discussed details.
However, Kumar said the meeting doesn't signal a resumption of bilateral dialogue between the two countries.
In the letter dated September 14, Khan also proposed a meeting between Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in NY this month. Swaraj and Qureshi will head the delegations of their respective countries to the UNGA.
Qureshi said the world should see that "Pakistan has held a positive outlook towards the situation while India's attitude has not been so forthcoming". In his letter, Khan had written, "Pakistan and India have an undeniably challenging relationship".
The killing of Indian soldiers took place before the talks were confirmed by the MEA Thursday, while 20 postage stamps on "Kashmiri terrorists" were released even before the Pakistani elections took place in July.
The foreign ministers of India and Pakistan are to meet on the sidelines of the United Nations general assembly next week in the first high-level contact between the neighbours in almost three years.
There is also a stalemate on the issue of opening the Kartarpur corridor for helping pilgrims visit the esteemed Gurudwara, located about 120 KM from Pakistan.
While the Indians stated that the agenda had not been agreed, the Pakistani prime minister had proposed that the two foreign ministers should "explore the way forward, especially the holding of the SAARC Council of Ministers followed by the SAARC summit in Islamabad". "And sometimes credit should also be given to us".
India retaliated by carrying out "surgical strikes" in September 2016 across the Line of Control (LoC).
