Juncker indicates he won’t accept May’s Post-Brexit single market plan

Delivering his "State of the Union" address in Strasbourg on Wednesday morning, the Commission President underlined the EU's rejection of any plan that breaks up the key components of the single market, which guarantees freedom of movement for goods, services, people and capital.

The original proposal from May 2016 aims to transform the existing European Asylum Support Office into a fully-fledged European Union Agency for Asylum with an enhanced mandate and considerably expanded tasks.

He did not mention Hungary, but after his speech, MEPs voted overwhelmingly to trigger punitive Article 7 proceedings against the country for a serious breach of the EU's core values under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

"But this is not enough", Juncker told the European Parliament.

"Clock-changing must stop", Mr Juncker said in his statement.

In his annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament, Jean-Claude Juncker said an hour was a "decisive time window".

Should the United Kingdom continue the tradition of changing the clocks post-Brexit, it threatens to create a new time border between Belfast and Dublin, which will remain part of Europe.

While it was clear that a free trade pact would be some way off, and well after Juncker steps down in a year's time, the European Union would look to take advantage of African efforts to forge a free trade area within the continent to work towards a comprehensive continent-to-continent trade agreement.

"I showed Europe to be an open continent. The strength of a united Europe, both in principle and in practice, gave me the clout I needed to get tangible results for citizens and businesses alike", Juncker said.

Against the backdrop of an ever more uncertain world, he stressed the need for Europe to become more sovereign so as to be able to play a role in shaping global affairs.

He said the EU's executive Commission is proposing a standing corps for the border and coast guard agency numbering 10,000 staff, including guards and migration experts, to be up and running by 2020.

If authorities flag content that incites and advocates extremism, the content must be removed from the web within an hour, the proposal from the EU's lead civil servant state. "It is absurd that European companies buy European planes in dollars instead of euro".

Juncker then went on to say that a state that went out to forge its own deal would not be as successful at the European Union, he commented "No single member state would've been able to launch the satellites that 400m users around the world are already benefitting from".

Regarding sanctions, one of Juncker's expected ideas was a proposal to abandon unanimity for renewing sanctions and to pass such decisions by a qualified majority instead.
