Kavanaugh's accuser makes more demands for testimony agreement

Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mc Connell speaks to the 2018 Values Voters Summit in Washington on Friday

After my first ten cases, the ache in my stomach would come like clockwork as I sat down to open a sexual assault file for the first time.

He went on: "I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents".

"Some have gone so far as to state, "She's mixed up"; "She's mistaken"; "She's not in really a position to make conditions"; and, 'I'll listen to the lady, but we're going to bring this to a close.' These shameful attacks show why it is so hard for survivors of sexual assault to come forward", the Democrats wrote in their letter.

Chuck Grassley, the committee's Republican chairman, on Wednesday sent a letter to Ford's lawyers giving her until 10am (14:00 GMT) on Friday to submit prepared testimony if she meant to show up on Monday. The invite was sent Thursday morning, but a campaign spokesman called it an "old invite" scheduled before Ford's accusation became public. She also said the committee should be able to use its discretion to structure the hearing as it sees fit.

Lawyers for the woman accusing Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her say she wants to testify before a Senate panel next week, but only if her safety is ensured.

The story that won't go away this week - or, really, this month - is that of Donald Trump's attempt to put another conservative judge on the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh.

Meanwhile, Ford's lawyers continue to tussle with Republican leadership on the Senate Judiciary Committee about when, if ever, she will appear before the committee to testify. "They've delayed it a week already". Kavanaugh, now a judge on the powerful U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, has repeatedly denied her allegation.

Republican lawmakers are trying to win Senate confirmation for Kavanaugh ahead of the court's start of a new term on October 1, or if not by then, ahead of the November 6 nationwide congressional elections, to show Republican voters they have made good on campaign promises to place conservative judges like Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court.

Since making the allegation, Republicans in charge of the committee have scrambled to offer Ford the opportunity to testify on Monday and gave her several options for an interview venue with the committee or committee staff in D.C. or even in her home state of California. "He remains committed to providing a fair forum for both Dr Ford and Judge Kavanaugh".

RAINN says there are a number of reasons why victims never report their abuse, including fear of retaliation, the belief that the police wouldn't help and feeling like the crime was a personal matter.

'Why didn't somebody call the Federal Bureau of Investigation 36 years ago?' he asked. Judge has told the committee he does not recall the incident and does not want to speak publicly.

The FBI investigated a sexual harassment claim against a Supreme Court nominee in 1991 at the behest of the White House, finishing that inquiry in three days.

Late Thursday, the White House released a letter from Kavanaugh to Grassley in which he said he wants to tell his side in a Monday hearing.

Republicans have resisted all Democratic efforts to slow and perhaps block Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation.
