Kenyan runner's stunning time smashes marathon world record

Eliud Kipchoge crosses the start line

Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge has set a new marathon world record, winning the Berlin race in 2 hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds on Sunday. Kipruto and Kipsang's times are an indication of how Kipchoge's pace blew the race apart from the outset.

Kipchoge said a record time was in his sights before the race, and after the opening few kilometres, it became clear his pacemakers would be pushed to the limit.

"I had a great belief that I would run a World record but I dint know I would run 2:01". According to the IAAF, that is the largest improvement on the marathon record since Derek Clayton cut two minutes and 23 seconds off the world record in 1967. "I will come back next year", he said. "So I want to thank everyone who has helped me", Kipchoge, who past year took part in the Nike Breaking Two project, where he ran two hours and 25 seconds with the aid of "illegal" in and out pacemakers.

With three pacemakers in front of him, Kipchoge ran the first kilometre in just 2:43 - gapping the rest of the elite field immediately.

In another victory for Kenyan athletics, Gladys Cherono won the women's race in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 11 seconds, setting a new women's record for the course in Berlin. By 40 kilometrers, reached in 1:55:32, a world record looked a certainty.

While Kipchoge clearly stole the show in Berlin, the depth of the women's race is certainly noteworthy.

He kept injecting the pace and by the 30km mark, he was a massive 52 seconds inside World Record pace having covered the distance in a time of 1:26:45.

Kenya's Edna Kiplagat finished fourth in a time of 2:21:18 and made history of her own by becoming the first female athlete to run in all major marathons and finishing within the top six in all.

Kipchoge arrived on the world marathon scene at Hamburg in 2013 following a successful track career that left him with a collection of Olympic medals and world titles.

"I lack words to describe this day", said a beaming Kipchoge, a former world champion over 5,000-metres and marathon gold medallist at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.

Kipchoge, who a year ago took part in the Nike Breaking Two project, where he ran two hours and 25 seconds with the aid of "illegal" in and out pacemakers, started off at a sizzling pace.
