Majority of voters oppose impeachment, support House Democrats on generic ballot

GOP Tax Plan Cropped

The lowest was noted in the Gallup poll, with an approval rating of 41 percent, a drop of just one point from its previous poll.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,038 voters nationwide from September 6 to 9, with a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points.

The shift is particularly acute in the US Midwest, where Democrats have enjoyed a 13-point swing in their direction since July, according to the poll.

The majority of US voters said they would not like to see Congress begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, according to a new poll released on Wednesday. Approval for the Russian investigation lead by Special Counsel Robert Mueller hit an all-time high, with 63% of Americans supporting Mueller's probe, according to the poll taken end of August.

The dwindling number of voters who have faith in the president's mental acuity runs parallel to claims made in several books about the Trump White House, most recently Fear by veteran reporter Bob Woodward and Unhinged by former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman. "An anemic 38 percent approval rating is compounded by lows on honesty, strength and intelligence", Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement.

"The economy booms, but President Donald Trump's numbers are a bust".

Democrats, however, now hold a 52-38 advantage over Republicans when voters are asked which party they would rather support in a congressional election, marking a slight uptick from the poll last month. Republicans were the only group that trusted Trump more than the media, by 72 to 12 percent.

The president's party often gets clobbered in midterm election years.

This, together with Trump choosing Brett Kavanaugh, an unpopular candidate, as Supreme Court nominee, might make it hard for the administration to project a confident image, which might be reflected in the November polls, Vox reported.
