Man dies after shark attack off Cape Cod

The attack happened around noon at Newcomb Hollow Beach

A 26-year old man was tragically killed by what experts believe is the first fatal shark attack in MA in more than 80 years.

The Cape Cod National Park Service said the attack happened around 12:30 p.m. 300 yards south of Newcomb Hollow.

The family of the victim was notified of the death but his name was not released, Procopio said.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Tara Militmore named Mr Medici has the man who had died.

The beach was closed following the attack.

A witness of the attack told the Providence Journal he saw "a giant eruption of water - 15 feet-wide".

Wendy Northcross, CEO of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, said the Cape doesn't have a lot of experience in how to manage these shark attacks.

He said those officials were responsible for "this disgusting shark attack" due to lack of attention and inaction.

"The inshore waters off Wellfleet are a feeding ground for Great White Sharks", the sign reads.

A NY man was severely injured August 15 after fighting off a shark off Truro, also on Cape Cod.

At the site of Saturday's attack, people are greeted by a sign warning them to "Be Shark Smart" and advising swimmers to not swim near seals, close to the shore or in waist deep water.

Joe Booth, a local fisherman and surfer, said he was on shore when he saw the man and his friend boogie boarding.

'It was like right out of that movie Jaws.

However, shark sightings around the Cape have reportedly been more frequent this year, leading to several beach closings.

He sustained severe injuries to his legs and is still recovering in hospital. He described how the late victim kicked something behind him, before a tale emerged from the water. He freed himself by punching the shark in the gills, he told the Boston Globe.
