Mel Gibson To Co-Write & Direct ‘Wild Bunch’ Remake At Warner Bros

Mel Gibson To Co-Write & Direct ‘Wild Bunch’ Remake At Warner Bros.

The actor-director is on-board to direct a remake of Western classic The Wild Bunch, EW has confirmed. Gibson will co-write the script along with Bryan Bagby, known for his work on the short film On Duty, and will executive produce the remake.

The film is based on the 1969 Sam Peckinpah film of the same name, which was controversial for its graphic violence upon its first release. That film followed a group of aging outlaws looking for one last score as the industrial age encroaches upon the American West. Up next for Gibson is the World War II drama Destroyer, which focuses on the Battle of Okinawa.

It's unknown if Gibson's "Wild Bunch" will be a straight remake or a different story. That film, with Mark Wahlberg attached to star, is now looking for financing.

Gibson most recently helmed the WWII biopic Hacksaw Ridge, which earned him a Best Director Oscar nomination in 2017 despite controversy surrounding his comeback. The Wild Bunch was a modest commercial and massive critical success and has been called one of the greatest westerns in the genre's history, maintaining a 94% "Certified Fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. While Sam Peckinpah's original film was criticized for the amount of violence on the screen, he defended it by stating that it was metaphorical to the Vietnam War, which was going on at the time. However, the project stalled after his death in 2012. Later in 2010, Gibson was recorded by ex-wife Oksana Grigorieva making racial slurs.
