NC Governor urges residents to remain in shelters as flooding continues

U.S. President Donald Trump stands in front of a damaged sailboat while touring Hurricane Florence damage in New Bern, North Carolina, U.S., September 19, 2018. At the time, it seemed to reflect Trump's brand of playfulness.

Global warming has increased the likelihood of more massive, sluggish storms like Florence, capable of dropping record amounts of rain and causing the type of catastrophic flooding that crippled North and SC this week, experts said. "America grieves with you and our hearts break for you", Trump said.

Trump pledged federal assistance as the Carolinas begin the long recovery from a storm estimated to have caused billions of dollars in damage and left dozens dead. We will never leave your side. "We are with you all the way", he said.

The emotional words and comprehensive itinerary stood in contrast with Trump's trip to Puerto Rico previous year after Hurricane Maria, when he drew criticism for tossing rolls of paper towels into the crowd.

Recently, Trump has angrily challenged the almost 3,000 deaths attributed to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico a year ago.

Trump took a moment during the briefing to ask a state official, "How is Lake Norman doing?"

Trump was apparently talking to an older man whose home had been damaged after a large yacht had washed ashore and was shipwrecked against the wooden deck of his porch.

After the owner said no, Trump replied: "At least you got a nice boat out of the deal". "Maybe it becomes theirs".

Trump visited several sites in North Carolina and SC almost a week after the storm, which began as Hurricane Florence, started dumping rain on the southeastern United States.

A wall of concrete barriers and plastic sheets is being built along US Highway 501 to save the main road into Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, from going underwater.

Speaking from inside an airplane hangar, Trump told emergency workers, "The job you've done has been incredible".

Trump told reporters as he departed the White House that he will also visit SC before he returns to the White House later Wednesday. The president leaned over and checked in with people as they drove through to pick up food. When no one answered, they turned their attention to their white house with dark shutters - partially submerged in the water in front of them.

"You gotta take care of home", Jordan told The Charlotte Observer newspaper. He chatted and shook people's hands as he walked along a street strewn with trash, branches and wet furniture.

Lyerly is one of five Duke researchers who published a paper in the N.C. Medical Journal on Tuesday concluding that people who live near hog farm operations have higher rates of infant mortality, kidney disease, tuberculosis, septicemia, and higher hospital admissions.

"We're getting all teed up for a lot of money to come down to the area". And while sunny skies have returned, the water problems are just beginning. "If you have a child or someone elderly or on a steroid inhaler or on chemotherapy, they may be more fragile".

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, arrived in storm-ravaged North Carolina on Wednesday (Thursday NZ Time) and helped volunteers at a church in the hard-hit coastal town of New Bern.

The president assured locals that federal funding would be available.

More than 1,100 roads were still closed across North Carolina, Cooper said, including several portions of interstates 40 and 95.
