New Spotify Beta Feature Allows Artists To Directly Upload Music For Free

Once Fox Searchlight

Still, uploads represent another way for musicians and Spotify to cut out middlemen. Musicians invited to participate in the private beta will spot a new option in the "Spotify for Artists" mobile app and website that will allow them to directly upload their tunes (see image at the top of this article).

"Since we launched Spotify for Artists, one of the top requested features has been the ability to upload music directly onto Spotify".

This doesn't mean anyone can upload their basement recordings to Spotify now. And according to MBW, it's also not charging any additional commission on the royalties generated.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has been gearing up to this for some time.

Currently, the feature is only available "by invitation to a few hundred US-based independent artists", but Spotify says they'll expand the availability over the next few months. The key objective that we're pursuing is taking the data and insights that we're generating on our platform, and creating tools that allow artists and labels to better market themselves in the marketplace.

But the move could reset Spotify's relations with artists, many of whom have complained that they see little back even as streaming brings handsome profits to the industry.

"Just like releasing through any other partner, you'll get paid when fans stream your music on Spotify".

"You'll be able to deliver music straight to Spotify and plan for the ideal release day", Spotify explains.

The free service, which allows indie artists to circumvent digital distributors and receive 100 per cent of their royalties directly from Spotify, provides users with 50 per cent of Spotify's net revenue and takes no ownership over their copyrighted material.
