Nigeria suspends national carrier Nigeria Air

Mixed reactions greet suspension of national carrier by Federal Government

The Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika has announced the Federal Government's decision to suspend its national carrier, Nigeria Air from takeoff.

He, however did not give details of the "strategic reasons" for the cancellation of the project.

Nigeria is suspending the relaunch of its national airline just over two months after it announced the new venture, the country's aviation minister has said.

The Nigerian government on Wednesday announced immediate suspension of its widely publicised national carrier, two months after it was unveiled at an global air show.

But on Wednesday, the minister stated, "Today in council, the Federal Government of Nigeria has chose to suspend the national carrier project for some strategic reasons and we will advise you in due course".

"All commitments due will be honoured", he said.

He had announced that the airline would begin operation in December with an initial capital of 300 million dollars.

"We thank the public for the support as always", the minister's tweeted statement added.

On July 18 this year, the Federal Government unveiled the branding and livery for Nigeria Air and stated that the carrier would be inaugurated at the end of the year.

In reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday, July 20, accused the federal government of unveiling a non-existent national carrier in a desperate effort to deceive Nigerians now that election is around the corner.

"This will be a national carrier that is private sector led and driven".

At the unveiling, Sirika had said the airline will be managed by private investors with the federal government owning a five per cent stake in the business. This funding can be in the form of equity or debt.
