PARADISE LOST: Trump Admin Imposes MAJOR SANCTIONS on Maduro's Family, Top Officials

The Trump administration on Tuesday slapped financial sanctions on four members of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's inner circle, including his wife and the nation's vice-president, on allegations of corruption.

Among the figures targeted by the U.S. are First Lady of Venezuela Cilia Flores, who used to serve as attorney general under the late Hugo Chavez, and is now a legislator.

The new guidelines prohibit Americans from doing business with any assets or companies related to First Lady Cilia Flores, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, Communications Manager Jorge Rodriguez and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino.

Maduro has responded to the sanctions by stating that they are an honor coming from his foe Trump.

The US has been at odds with Venezuela's socialist government for decades.

"This clearly breaks from that strategy", said Smilde.

President Donald Trump will meet with Colombian President Ivan Duque Marquez at the United Nations General Assembly later on Tuesday, where the two leaders are expected to discuss the refugee crisis Maduro's government has prompted.

But beyond rallying Maduro's opponents, it's unclear what impact the sanctions will have.

US pressure on Maduro has increased as the South American nation deals with hyperinflation, food shortages and declining oil production.
