Pontiff accepts resignations of two more Chilean bishops: Vatican

Pope Francis delivers his weekly general

Vatican City - Pope Francis has accepted the resignations of two more bishops in Chile, as fallout mounts from widespread sex abuse scandals there.

Both are being investigated by prosecutors in Chile for alleged sexual abuse.

The Vatican announced on 21 September the resignations of 60-year-old Bishop Carlos Pellegrin Barrera of San Bartolome de Chillan and 71-year-old Bishop Cristian Contreras Molina of San Felipe.

An entire Chilean delegation of 34 bishops tendered their resignation to the pope in May. It said the prelate denied the allegations, and later that year, the Vatican declared him innocent, according to the diocese, and civil prosecutor threw out the case for lack of evidence.

BishopAccountability.org, a USA -based organization that keeps track of allegations and investigations of clerical sex abuse investigations and cover-ups worldwide, says that in 2014, Chilean church leaders announced that the Vatican was investigating Contreras Molina for alleged sexual abuse.

Just yesterday a press report in the Netherlands implicated more than half of the country's senior clerics in covering up sexual assault of children between 1945 and 2010.

He faces accusations he helped cover up sexual abuse in his diocese.

Father Perez wrote that Archbishop Scapolo "has not been and will not be the person with the sensitivity and skills needed to support a church in crisis like the Chilean one", and, he said, if Pope Francis had not been accurately informed about what was going on in Chile, one can presume that was partly the nuncio's fault.

He has said the church failed "to listen and react" to the allegations, but vowed to "restore justice".

Francis eventually accepted he was wrong to defend Barros and accepted his resignation.
