Rat Wipes $190M Off Restaurant Chain's Value

A rat was discovered in a hotpot restaurant in eastern China

The woman's husband, named as Mr Ma, said restaurant staff had told him: "If you are anxious about the baby, then we'll give you 20,000 yuan to abort it", according to Shanghai-based Kankan News.

The woman and her husband were eating at the restaurant Thursday night when she discovered the dead rat in the hotpot - and claims restaurant staff offered her money to get an abortion if the meal affected her unborn baby's health, according to reports.

Hotpot restaurant Xiabu Xiabu's stock hit its lowest level in nearly a year, after photos of the dead rat being fished out of the broth with a pair of chopsticks quickly spread online.

The restaurant allegedly later offered the couple 5,000 yuan ($728) in compensation for the incident - a price he was willing to negotiate after the hospital visit, he told the newspaper.

The outlet in Shandong province has now been temporarily suspended. Video circulated widely on social media in China, to the shock and disgust of viewers, shows the man in the eastern city of Weifang fishing the boiled rodent out of the murky broth with chopsticks.

An inspection was immediately undertaken at the restaurant but no trace of rats were found. "I'm never going to eat hotpot outside again", said one user.

Another user asked: "If something happens to her baby, how are they going to compensate her?" However, inspectors did find some of the restaurant's suppliers did not have the proper qualifications.

Hotpots are prepared with a simmering pot of soup stock at the dining table and contain a variety of east Asian foodstuffs.

Xiabu Xiabu had released a statement which declared that it was "impossible" that a lack of hygiene at the restaurant was to blame for the rat's appearance, but that statement was deleted a short time later. Ms Gao said the chain had always taken great care over the quality and safety of its food.
