Regional Pot Workers Could Face Lifetime Ban From US News Centre News

Canadian pot sector workers could face big troubles at the U.S. borders says analyst

Canadians who use marijuana, work in and invest in the marijuana industry risk a lifetime ban on travel to the United States, a USA official said this week.

In the meantime, workers in Canada's cannabis sector should stay away from the USA border until they find a new job, said Levitt.

McLeod is calling on Ottawa to strike an arrangement with the US government to ensure that Canadians participating in the soon-to-be-legal industry can travel freely between the two nations.

Similar comments made by a border official to Politico sent USA -traded shares of Canadian marijuana companies tumbling Thursday.

However, Owen, who oversees U.S border operations, said the traveler would still be able to apply for a waiver from the lifetime ban, which can takes months to be processed and costs $585.

"Facilitating the proliferation of the legal marijuana industry in U.S. states where it is deemed legal or Canada may affect an individual's admissibility to the U.S.", Owen continued.

In his interview with Politico, Owen added that Canadians should not expect cannabis-related questions as a matter of routine while crossing the border.

CBP has not specified a minimum investment threshold in marijuana businesses that would trigger the lifetime ban.

Another official said those participating in the marijuana business may be turned away at the border.

So what to do when you want to cross the border?

Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale has often said he's working with USA law enforcement to clarify the changes and make sure the border remains smooth.

"Despite one-in-eight Canadians using cannabis today, 400,000 people move between our two countries every day nearly entirely without incident", Goodale spokesman Scott Bardsley said by email. "We already notice somewhat of a trend of some people not going to the USA", said Silver. "No lawyer could counsel anyone to lie to a border agent, but if an agent asks the question, I suppose they could decline to answer".

"I think it's incredibly unsafe for someone to [lie], especially if they are somebody who works in the industry and their affiliation with the industry is readily available online", said Enenajor.

In an extensive interview with Politico, Todd Owen, the executive assistant commissioner for the Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Office of Field Operations, said, "Our officers are not going to be asking everyone whether they have used marijuana, but if other questions lead there-or if there is a smell coming from the auto, they might ask".

"You're not just going to see these northern Washington cases, you're going to see them Canada-wide from east to west coast", he said.
