Rosenstein reportedly discussed wearing 'wire,' invoking 25th Amendment against Trump

In a bombshell report this afternoon by the New York Times, it has been revealed that multiple anonymous sources working within the FBI and DOJ have come forward to divulge information pertaining to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's actions and thoughts early a year ago, shortly after he took over the Russian Federation investigation. "I will not further comment on a story based on anonymous sources who are obviously biased against the department and are advancing their own personal agenda".

Though none of Rosenstein's efforts apparently materialized, the Times' sources said he hoped to recruit Attorney General Jeff Sessions and then-Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly to help invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows for the removal of a president deemed unfit for office. One source for The Times reportedly said Rosenstein was being sarcastic about wearing a "wire", while others said he was serious.

The account, first reported by the New York Times, paints Rosenstein as so concerned in May 2017 in the wake of Trump's firing of then-FBI director James B. Comey that he contemplated secretly recording conversations with the president.

In his statement, Rosenstein said he wanted to be clear about one big point: "Based on my personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment". They came amid complaints about the disorganized search for Comey's replacement and Rosenstein's concern over Trump's erratic behavior.

In the ensuing days, the president and other members of his administration cited the memo to rationalize Comey's ouster, angering Rosenstein, who is said to have grown increasingly anxious his reputation was being sullied by the move.

ABC News confirmed the report shortly after.

Rosenstein reportedly made the comments just two weeks into his job, and after he began overseeing the investigation into Russian election interference. Later, Rosenstein, McCabe, along with four other Federal Bureau of Investigation officials met to discuss the White House's plans to replace the newly-removed Federal Bureau of Investigation head.

Rosenstein denied the allegations, blasting The Times' story as "factually incorrect".

During the meeting, the Times says, Rosenstein raised the prospect of donning a "wire", prompting others in the room to inquire if the offer was genuine.

The newspaper said its sources were people who were briefed either on the events themselves or on memos written by Federal Bureau of Investigation officials including Andrew McCabe, who became acting FBI director when Comey was sacked.

McCabe's lawyer, Michael Bromwich, said in a statement that his client had drafted memos to "memorialize significant discussions he had with high level officials and preserved them so he would have an accurate, contemporaneous record of those discussions".
