The Associated Press says the gunman took his own life as a sheriff's deputy got close.

The shooter first targeted his wife, and then a man at a trucking company in Bakersfield, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said, news agency Reuters reported. The gunman's motive and relationship to all the victims is now unclear.

The shooter then went to a house on Breckenridge Road, where he opened fire on two other men.

The gunman then went to a home where he shot two people, the sheriff continued.

When a deputy found the husband driving on Edison Highway, the suspect pulled into a lot and shot himself in the chest, according to the Californian.

When a male witness showed up, the suspect began chasing the man while firing at him, Youngblood said. The mother and child, however, managed to escape.

The shooting at multiple locations in Bakersfield in central California was possibly "a domestic violence incident", said Lieutenant Mark King of the Kern County sheriff's office.

He shot both of them dead, police said.

Kern County Sheriff's deputies gather near the scene in Bakersfield California, where a man shot five people dead. Obviously, there was a kind of situation that caused the husband to be extremely upset.

Sheriff's interviewed more than 30 witnesses and have served five search warrants, according to the CBS affiliate KBAK-TV.

Authorities did not release the name of the suspect or victims. "Our entire community, with one heavy heart, is praying for the victims and their families", he wrote.
