Spooked camel at Pittsburgh circus injures seven

Video shows that a camel got loose at the Shrine Circus during its stop at PPG Paints Arena on Sunday afternoon

A startled camel started bucking in some unspecified time in the future of a circus when a baby interestingly threw a shovel at its toes, injuring six young individuals and an adult and causing apprehensive circusgoers to hover the arena.

For a few seconds the arena became a circus indeed, with audience members shrieking as workers rushed to contain the renegade camel.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Sunday at PPG Paints Arena in downtown Pittsburgh, during the intermission of the Shrine Circus's final performance in town for the year. At least one of the children sustained a broken arm as a result.

Several witnesses told local news outlets that the camel suddenly grew frightened because a child threw a shovel at its feet.

In a video obtained by KDKA, an announcer was heard saying: "Ladies and gentlemen, remain calm please". Please remain calm. No unnecessary movement.

None of the animals was injured, Togneri said.

No animals, including the camel, were injured during the incident and all were checked out and cleared by a veterinarian.

And animal rights group Humane Action Pittsburgh added: 'This is yet another reason animal circuses should be banned.

A recent expert report detailed the neglect, abuse, and coercion of animals at Shrine circuses, including trainers whipping and jabbing tigers with prods, striking an elephant in the jaw, and forcing distressed, muzzled bears to do handstands. "PETA is calling on the Syria Shriners to let this be the straw that ends the camel acts and urging the public never to buy a ticket to any circus that uses animals".

Paul Leavy, a Shrine Circus organizer since 1993, has said in the past that the Shriners do not abuse animals.
