Tennis umpires considering boycotting Serena Williams matches

Tennis Umpires Are Reportedly Considering Boycott of Serena Williams Matches After US Open Incident

This is What's Trending Today ...

A report by The Times of London published on Tuesday cited an anonymous official saying that tennis umpires are considering refusing to officiate matches involving Williams.

"This was what I was thinking when Serena Williams was playing".

"I am good, under the circumstances", Ramos told Portugal's Tribuna Expresso.

She lost her temper, and while the reasons behind that might have been building for months, years or generations, that's really beside the point.

"You're stressing me out", Osaka quipped, somewhat sheepishly.

Ramos told the newspaper that he stayed off the streets of NY after the match to avoid any "complicated situations".

Ramos told the AP that he was focusing on getting back to work.

The baseball Hall of Famer confronted plenty of ugliness as he was pursuing Major League Baseball's home run record in the 1970s, and in an interview with Forbes, he said the criticism Williams has faced - including an Australian newspaper cartoon decried as racist - bears echoes of his own past. The USTA's party line has been that punishing Williams was exclusively his decision to make, and those decisions can not be overruled. It later started a larger debate about sexism in tennis.

Ramos was due to officiate on Friday in the Davis Cup match between Croatia and the United States in Zadar. The International Tennis Federation said the umpire had acted appropriately. It added that US Open organizers confirmed Ramos' decisions when they chose to fine Williams for the three offenses.

The row shows no signs of going away as fellow American legend of the sport Billie Jean King came out in support of Serena's sexism claims this week, saying in the aftermath of the final: "When a woman is emotional, she's "hysterical" and she's penalised for it".

Date, a former world number four, has tipped Osaka to become Japan's first tennis number one. She said on Tuesday both sides shared the blame for the incident.

Williams was quick to demand an apology from the umpire, but she has so far been unwilling to admit to any wrongdoing herself, either for her behavior on the court or for the way this controversy has overshadowed her opponent's hard-fought victory.

Williams was furious with being handed a one-game penalty during her defeat to Osaka and branded Ramos a "thief".
