Trump to declassify documents on Russian Federation investigation

While President Trump declassifying documents "at the request of a number of committees of Congress, and for reasons of transparency", may sound like routine presidential behavior, the directive announced by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Monday afternoon was actually a dramatic escalation of his attempts to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The Justice Department, though, offered a somewhat muted initial reaction, saying in a statement that such a command from the president "triggers a declassification review process that is conducted by various agencies within the intelligence community, " and officials were "already working with the Director of National Intelligence to comply with the President's order".

The material involving Page amounts to 412 pages of documents, comprising an October 2016 bureau application to the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for a warrant to monitor Page's communications for three months, and applications to extend the monitoring for three subsequent 90-day periods.

"We're going to see", Trump told reporters Tuesday while meeting with his Polish counterpart at the White House, repeating his allegation that the investigation itself "is a witch hunt".

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he is not anxious about what his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who is cooperating with the US special counsel's probe into Russian election meddling, will tell prosecutors, as long as he is truthful.

Ohr, a senior justice department official who specialises in investigating organised crime, has come under attack from Trump and Republicans because his wife has worked for Fusion GPS, a private intelligence firm that was involved in the production of a notorious "dossier" of allegations linking Trump to Russian Federation.

It is not clear from the statement when the declassification and release of the documents would occur.

"As long as he tells the truth, it's 100 percent", Trump said, before departing the White House to visit storm-ravaged North and SC.

The declassification decision and order for public release of the documents was quickly praised by Trump allies in Congress and attacked by Democrats.

"Americans deserve the truth about these egregious actions by government officials", Representative Scalise said.

There is no set timeline or format for the release of the materials at this time.

Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said in a statement Monday.

Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland and Rep. Jerrold Nadler of NY, the ranking Democrats on the House Oversight and Judiciary committees, said in a statement that Trump's actions were a "direct and frantic response" to Manafort's recent guilty plea and cooperation agreement with Mueller.
