Trump to Spain: Build a wall to keep out asylum seekers

Mr Trump's pledge to build a wall between the USA and Mexico was one of his best-known election promises.

Spanish foreign minister Josep Borrell revealed he had spoken to the president back in June about the crisis.

U.S. president Donald Trump has urged the Spanish government to tackle the Mediterranean migration crisis by building a wall across the Sahara desert, Spain's foreign minister has said.

The US-Mexico border is 1,954 miles (3,145 km) long.

"The Sahara border can't be bigger than our border with Mexico", he reportedly said, apparently unaware of the size of the desert.

The comments were made during a visit Mr Borrell made to the United States at the end of June, reports El Pais.

Since January of this year, 35,000 migrants arrived in Spain, the highest number received by any European Union country.

Migrants have increasingly been looking to Spain after being shunned by Italy's populist government, which has worked to clamp down on refugees, going so far as to shut its ports to migrant rescue ships.

According to Josep Borrell, the president wants the European Union member country to emulating his infamous Mexico border policy.

However, if Spain was to build a wall as suggested by Mr Trump, it would be complicated by the fact that it would have to be built on foreign territory.

The country does possess two small territories in Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, but these are situated on the northern coast of the continent - well away from the Sahara desert, which stretches across almost a dozen countries.
