US President Donald Trump calls on nations to isolate 'corrupt' Iran

World leaders laugh as Trump boasts of his achievements

Past year at the General Assembly, Trump laid out his vision for the world on the premise that strong, independent nations promote security, prosperity, and peace for themselves and for the world.

Mr Trump, who begins his political rallies with boasts about his economic record, used the same rhetoric before the crowd of world leaders and diplomats, telling them he had accomplished more than nearly any previous U.S. president.

"So true", Trump said with a tight-lipped smile, adding: "Didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK".

President Trump also took aim at the United Nations regarding aid programs he believes are contrary to America's interests.

Trump said the deal was a "windfall" for Iran's leaders, who used billions in sanctions relief to boost their military budget, increase repression, fund terrorism, havoc and slaughter in Syria and Yemen and enrich themselves.

Mr Trump compared USA relations with Iran to what he called improved ties with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, praising him for halting nuclear and missile tests and returning some United States remains from the 1950s Korean War.

Over the first year of his presidency, Trump repeatedly ignored calls for evidence-based approaches to curtail America's opioid epidemic, instead voicing support for draconian drug policies, including giving the death penalty to convicted drug dealers.

But Mr. Trump went after a series of world bodies, including the World Trade Organization, the oil-producing OPEC coalition, and the International Criminal Court, which he said has "no legitimacy".

As in his inauguration remarks, Trump at the United Nations portrayed the U.S., the world's most powerful country, as a victim that has been exploited by nefarious external forces and himself as the savior.

"We ask all nations to isolate Iran's regime as long as its aggression continues".

In a tweet on Tuesday morning, Trump said he had no plans to meet Rouhani "despite requests" to do so.

Speaking at a United Nations press conference on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the Trump administration is making a "fervent effort" to stop Iran from being what he called the world's largest state sponsor of terror. Mr Trump has said sanctions on North Korea would remain for now. The Iranian leader accuses the US of adopting a hostile stance toward his country.

In his address, Mr Rouhani will stress that Iran continues to stick to the 2015 deal and will likely portray the USA as a pariah for breaking its global commitments. The White House did not immediately explain why Trump was late.

A second meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un is now being worked out.

US President Donald Trump asks worldwide community to isolate Iran US President Donald Trump begins his speech.

On Iran, Bolton said the expectation is "massive changes in their behavior".

Trump has been busy enough at the United Nations that he hasn't had time to tweet about the speech, but once he gets back in to the warmer comforts of his couch, he'll surely let rip with what will no doubt be a tirade for the ages.

Mr Trump pointed out the the USA withdrawal from the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and the reinstatement of United States economic sanctions, as he looked to make a point.
