Woolies lifts milk price to help drought-stricken farmers

The idea of a 10-cent levy was put two weeks ago by dairy farmer Shane Hickey from Kyogle in northern New South Wales and the Queensland Dairyfarmers Organisation (QDO).

A furious farmer has slammed the supermarkets for not doing enough as both Coles and Woolworths announce a milk levy to help drought-hit workers.

The supermarket explained it will work with its own brand fresh milk suppliers who source milk from drought affected regions to setup the drought relief oversight committee, ensuring the extra 10 cents per litre paid to suppliers will be distributed to dairy farmers.

The supermarket also encouraged customers to buy other dairy brands, a number of which have already implemented their own measures to help drought-affected farmers.

The decision adds to the supermarket's ongoing support of Aussie dairy farmers with Coles and its customers already committing nearly $12 million to drought relief, including $5 million from the Coles Nurture Fund.

It said that it had already committed nearly $12 million to drought relief, including $5 million from its Coles Nurture Fund, also to assist the farmers.

Moreover, the Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud had backed the efforts of a 10 cent a litre drought levy and said this was a win for dairy farmers. The 10 per cent increase will be donated to the National Farmers' Federation's 2018 Drought Relief Fund. Coles has partnered with NFF since 2012 to support local farmers. He applauded Woolworths to show the leadership regarding it.

Woolworths Director of Fresh Food Paul Harker said customers were asking the supermarket giant to help farmers during the hard times.

Mr Morrison said yesterday that dealing with immediate drought relief was his top priority, as well as ensuring communities can recover and rebuild.

"We need to give farmers more bargaining power and help them get a fair return out of the market so they aren't going cap-in-hand to processors and retailers".

The milk will be available in Queensland, New South Wales, ACT and Victoria from mid-October "to help provide short-term relief".
