Abrams defends burning state flag, Confederate symbol in '92

Trevor Noah Thinks He’s Come Up With The Perfect Way To Stop GOP Voter Suppression

People watching the state of politics closely were curious to see if the so-called "Black wave" of successful African-American politicians, especially women, would continue with Abrams' candidacy.

The campaign of Democratic candidate for Georgia governor Stacey Abrams is defending her involvement in burning the state flag, which contained a prominent Confederate symbol, during a protest while in college more than 25 years ago.

The Confederate flag was included in the Georgia state flag in 1956 amid a backlash against racial integration following the Brown v. Board of Education ruling. The New York Times recovered an article from the demonstration with the candidate pictured holding up the burning flag.

According to The Huffington Post, Kemp is not only running for governor, but he is in charge of the upcoming election as Georgia's Secretary of State.

"Stacey was involved with a permitted, peaceful protest against the confederate emblem in the flag" at a time that a "conversation was sweeping across Georgia" about changing the flag, Collazo said.

Georgia has one of the largest commemorations, a very big bas-relief carving on the side of Stone Mountain that features Confederate leaders Gens.

The last Democratic governor was Roy Barnes, elected in 1998 - and, as The Times reported, his support for changes to the Confederate symbols on the state flag may have cost him his job. The Confederate battle flag emblem wasn't fully removed from the state's flag until 2003.

She called the carving, which shows President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson on horseback, "a symbol of white supremacy". "Confederate monuments belong in museums where we can study and reflect on that awful history, not in places of honor across our state". The original Journal-Constitution story quotes one of the student protesters as saying, "We're going to send Georgia's racist past up in flames".

The Kemp campaign did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment. "I'd have set that thing on fire too".
