Apple Watch to be used in major study of joint replacement patients

Apple Watch to be part of new clinical study

Thanks to the new app.

Apple and Zimmer Biomet, which is among the biggest manufacturers of reconstructive products, have developed the mymobility app. Also, patients who don't own on Apple Watch will be given one for the project.

"We are incredibly excited to work with Apple to transform the knee and hip replacement experience for patients and surgeons", Zimmer Biomet President and CEO Bryan Hanson, said in a statement. The app guides patients before and after their surgeries to help them improve their health outcomes. In addition, they can monitor patients' activity levels as they prepare for and recover from surgery.

Some hospitals and medical facilities in California, Colorado, Michigan, Massachusetts, and several others will get those important data, like steps taken, heart rate and standing hours from patients who will undergo or are still recuperating from the said surgery.

Ultimately, the study will have the potential to enroll as many as 10,000 participants, according to a news release. With this app, they will know whether or not their patients are following their regimes as prescribed before or after the surgery.

More than a million knee and hip replacements happen every year in the U.S., according to Zimmer Biomet.

Apple believes that having the ability to use their activity and health data can help them in improving their own care.

A team of researchers in the USA have also come together to use iPhone and Apple Watch to track binge eating disorder among people.

During this research, patients will use "mymobility" app with Apple Watch as they progress through their hip or knee replacement journey.

How Can You Use the App?

. However, the company will make it available to everyone in the future. In 2017, Apple partnered with Stanford Medicine to investigate how the Apple Watch's health features can be used to spot uneven heartbeats. Apple also donated 1000 units of Apple Watch to the University of North Carolina to study eating disorder or binge eating.

Indeed, it's another way Apple is wielding its smartwatch as a more serious health tool. Apple is also working forward to spot signs of Parkinson's disease and signs of stroke using its ResearchKit platform that comes with Apple Watch.

Zimmer Biomet is also commencing the "mymobility" clinical study, created to study the app's impact on patient outcomes and overall costs for joint replacement patients.
