Climate change threatens mental health

Study gives depressing look at how climate change puts Americans’ mental health at risk

Especially significant given the dire United Nations climate change report is the authors' finding that people affected by Hurricane Katrina had a 4 percent higher prevalence of mental-health issues than people in comparably sized communities who had not experienced a natural disaster.

Between 2002 and 2012, almost 2 million participants were asked this question: "Now thinking about your mental health, which includes stress, depression, and problems with emotions, for how many days during the past 30 days was your mental health not good?" Responses were then split into two categories.

The study authors acknowledged that this was a far cry from assessing an individual's true psychiatric state.

The CDC data included a location for each participant, and the researchers used it to match each person's mental health status to the weather where he or she lived. Patz and his co-authors found that high temperatures impacted admissions for self-harm, including attempted suicide. Researchers warned that as the earth's temperatures rose, the rain fall also increased due to increased water evaporation. Both people with low income and women were 60 percent more likely to have emotions tied to weather than those with a higher income and men, respectively, according to the study's findings.

A five year warming of the climate by 1 degree Celsius was associated with a 2 percent rise in mental health problems.

Next, the researchers considered the effect of warming that occurred over the course of several years.

The study's lead author, Nick Obradovich, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab, told CNN it's not totally clear why increasing temperatures result in increasing mental-health issues, but the data is clear. For instance, when they focused on the 78 cities that had data for all 10 years, they found the effect was slightly larger.

"If we change our attitude to mental health - we change the world". Meanwhile, months with an increase of precipitation can increase the probability of mental health issues by 2 percent.

Finally, the team examined mental health reports from people affected by Hurricane Katrina and compared them to reports from people in comparable-sized places that had not been affected by the catastrophic hurricane. Experiencing Katrina was linked to a four percentage point increase in the prevalence of mental health problems.

The global health organisation said this in a report: "Coming of age: Adolescent health" to mark the World Mental Health Day commemorated on Wednesday.

In a landmark study published this Monday (8th October 2018) in the latest issue of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of researchers have said that global warming could take a serious toll on mental health of humans.
