Cyclone Titli batters eastern India, 300000 evacuated

2 killed as Cyclone Titli smashes eastern India

BHUBANESWAR, India: A cyclone slammed into India's eastern seaboard on Thursday, killing at least five people, destroying huts, uprooting trees, snapping telephone poles and power lines and leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity.

Authorities say roads are blocked and power supplies have been lost in many areas.

In view of adverse weather conditions, it has advised hoisting of local warning signal LW-4 at all ports of Odisha.

"The evacuation operation was carried out soon after the warning was issued days before and people are now in relief camps", said Vishnu Pad Sethi, Relief Commissioner (DM), Odisha.

The IMD advised total suspension of fishing operations and shifting of coastal hutment dwellers to safe places. Wind speed at Gopalpur during the landfall was around 126 kmph.

Water Resources secretary Pradip Jena said that since the IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in south Odisha, there is a possibility of flood in Rushikulya and Bansadhara rivers and their tributaries.

It is very likely to move north-north westwards and cross Odisha & adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coasts between Gopalpur & Kalingapatnam around morning of 11th October.

Districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall till Thursday, the IMD said.

After the landfall, the system is very likely to re-curve gradually northeastwards, move towards Gangetic West Bengal across Odisha and weaken gradually. The rainfall intensity will decrease from Friday.

The chief secretary said so far, 10 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and eight teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been deployed in various coastal and interior districts.

There were no casualties reported so for anywhere in the cyclone-hit areas because of preparedness by official machinery, asserted chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu at a teleconference with the district collectors of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram.

This is the second severe cyclone alert for Odisha in the last two months, after "Cyclone Daye" crossed the Odisha coast on September 20 and triggered heavy downpour.
