Djokovic wins Shanghai to close on world no.1

Djokovic won the Rolex Shanghai Masters without conceding a set

The 20-time Grand Slam champion and top seed will meet 13th seed Borna Coric on Saturday after the Croatian defeated unseeded Australian Matthew Ebden 7-5, 6-4.

Djokovic played his 1,000th career match against Zverev and holds an impressive 827-173 win-loss record.

I do feel Coric can keep matters close, at the very least.

In contrast, Coric - who is into his first Masters 1000 final - was largely untroubled on his serve.

Djokovic's data is obviously still better, at 87.8% and 30.0%, respectively (117.8% combined), and unsurprisingly he's the favourite to take the title.

"But for me serve was always, so to say, a hidden weapon, the shot in the game that is obviously very important, "the" most important".

The 14-time Grand Slam champion cruised through the first set before Coric recovered from 3-0 down in the second set to earn a break point at 3-2.

Coric, 21, looked far from his best in his first ATP Masters final as he dropped his serve in the opening game of the second set and although he saved three match points to hold serve in the ninth game, Djokovic served out after one hour and 36 minutes to clinch his fourth title of the season.

Red-hot Djokovic has now been victorious in 18 ATP matches in a row and in recent months won Wimbledon, the Cincinnati Masters, the US Open and now Shanghai.

Djokovic, who endured a turbulent last season with injury and off-court issues, said they were "both different players" now.

The young German, who is yet to win a Grand Slam despite his undoubted talent, angrily threw his racquet at the start of the second set as Djokovic ramped up the pressure.

Djokovic posted only nine unforced errors to 24 for Zverev. "I don't think I'm beating anyone with that, to be honest", said the fourth seed.
