Dubai-Bound AI Flight Hits Trichy Airport Wall, Passengers Safe

An Air India plane suffered damage after smashing into a wall during takeoff

An Air India Express flight to Dubai with 130 passengers on board had a close shave when it hit the perimeter wall of the Trichy worldwide airport during take-off early on Thursday.

The Dubai-bound plane hit the ATC compound wall at Trichy airport and was damaged under the belly.

The aircraft was declared fit for operations after inspection at Mumbai.

The flight diverted to Mumbai and landed safely at about 5.35 AM in Mumbai and taxied on its own power to the parking stand.

Air India said the two pilots, who have more than 6,500 hours of flying experience between them, have been grounded, pending investigation. It said it had informed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation about the incident. While the source said the flight had to make an emergency landing at the airport due to issues with hydraulic fuel, a spokesperson of the national carrier claimed there was a hydraulic fuel "shortage". Another flight has been arranged to take the passengers from Mumbai to Dubai, Air India said.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister Vellamandi N Natarajan visited Tiruchirappalli airport and inspected the accident spot. The matter was conveyed to the pilot in command.

As a result of the impact, the antenna, a part of the west-side wall and the instrument landing system (ILS) of the flight was reportedly damaged, The Times of India reported.

It was made a decision to divert the aircraft to Mumbai as a precautionary measure, the airline said. No one suffered any injuries. The pilot and co-pilot have been de-rostered till completion of the investigation.
