It said on Monday that it intends holding an emergency committee meeting to decide whether the outbreak is a public health emergency of worldwide concern.

The committee of experts may make recommendations to manage the outbreak, which was declared on August 1 and has worsened, with a risk of the virus spreading from northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo into Uganda and Rwanda.

As of October 14, 2018, there have been a total of 214 cases of Ebola in the region (179 laboratory-confirmed cases and 35 probable cases) and 104 confirmed deaths.

World Health Organization recently said the risk of regional spread was "very high" as confirmed cases were reported close to the heavily traveled border with Uganda. Since Aug 8, 16,973 people have been vaccinated, including 6,832 in Beni.Tedros convenes emergency panelToday the director-general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, PhD, announced a meeting of the Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations, which will take place in Geneva on Wednesday. The health ministry said 73 patients had received new experimental treatments.

The organization on September 28 elevated the national and regional risk of the outbreak from "high" to "very high", although the global outbreak risk is still low.

33 new cases of Ebola were confirmed between Sunday 7th October and Friday 12th October-up from 6 cases the previous week.

Working alongside the Ministry of Health, Save the Children has recruited and trained 230 Community Health Workers who travel door-to-door and inform families on how to prevent the spread of the disease through simple steps like handwashing.

Since Ebola virus was first identified in 1976, sporadic outbreaks have been reported in Africa. The bordering nations remain on high alert and vaccination preparedness strategies are being implemented in Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi as a precaution.

In a new approach to increase community engagement and surveillance integration, members of the community in 12 neighborhoods across the Beni Health Zone have partnered with health workers to promote prevention methods.
