Elon Musk Announces Opening Date of His High-Speed Underground Tunnel

Elon Musk's Savage Fortnite Joke Has Led To A Trolling War

SpaceX, Tesla and Boring Company founder and CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter Sunday to announce the the Boring Company's first tunnel, which runs beneath Hawthorne, will be ready to open on December 10.

In April, the Los Angeles City Council's public works committee unanimously approved an environmental review exemption for a Boring Co. tunnel that could run 2.7 miles through West L.A. Constructed by one of the billionaire's side projects, The Boring Company, the almost two-mile-long underground subway will transport passengers using electric "skates" which travel up to 155 miles per hour. A bank of elevators would take pedestrians, cyclists or cars from street-level stations to underground tunnel stops.

The prominent businessman and engineer said on his social media page that the first tunnel of the project located in Hawthorne, a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, is nearly done and due to be open on December 10. The company will then offer free rides to the public the next day, he said, allowing passengers to travel as fast as 155 miles per hour.

Musk has previously said that his tunneling company "started out as a joke" and admitted that the project might fail.

In addition to the testing tunnel and the East Coast route, the Boring company lists an underground tunnel project in Chicago. Companies developing the technology include Virgin Hyperloop One and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies.
