Essential cuts 30% of its workforce

The Essential Phone and 360 camera

Struggling smartphone maker Essential has made a sizable cut to its staff.

The layoffs are the latest in a long line of setbacks for Android creator Andy Rubin's fledgling startup. However, the company reportedly wasn't able to sell more than a few thousand units.

That said, the company had a valuation of almost $1 billion in 2017 and was seeking additional financing earlier this year. The company spent about $100 million developing its first products, and Rubin put Essential up for sale, Bloomberg News reported earlier this year.

"This has been a hard decision to make".

According to Bloomberg, the startup scrapped plans to release another Essential Phone over the product's disappointing sales. A company spokesperson didn't confirm the extent of layoffs, but said that the decision was hard for the firm to make and, "We are confident that our sharpened product focus will help us deliver a truly game changing consumer product". "We are confident that our sharpened product focus will help us deliver a truly game-changing consumer product", the spokeswoman said, as quoted by Bloomberg. Overall, Essential hopes to craft a device that can answer people for its user, with a working prototype set to be showcased by the end of the year.

The company says it still sees a way forward, despite the difficulties. Our thoughts go out to the affected staff, who will hopefully manage to find their feet moving forward.
