Essential Now Building New Phone, Report Says, With All the AI

Essential is reportedly working on a 'new kind of phone' with a mind of its own

Essential Products Inc., the consumer electronics startup run by Android creator Andy Rubin, is putting most projects aside to focus on development of a new kind of phone that will try to mimic the user and automatically respond to messages on their behalf, according to people familiar with the plans. Instead, Bloomberg's report says, it will be amn AI-powered device that will provide the functions of Google Duplex mixed with a bit of Alexa.

According to the report, the design of the upcoming smartphone is not like the standard phone that we've seen seeing. Think of it as an AI-powered device with a tiny screen that is supposed to reply to your text messages as it was you and make calls on your behalf.Credit: Brian Ach/Getty ImagesThe Essential Phone PH-1 was a attractive disaster that nobody wanted to buy and even less people knew about.

It appears that the major aim for the said upcoming device from Essential is to offer work-related features like book appointments and respond to emails and text messages. What we are getting is a new smartphone that could use artificial intelligence to make you use your smartphone with voice commands. Using voice as the main input point not only presents privacy concerns, but it's also a technical challenge around voice recognition that even companies like Google are struggling to master. As a result, Essential expects to market the product as a complement to people's smartphones or as a phone for those who want to spend less time tethered to their screens. "I think I can solve part of the addictive behavior".

Essential is expected to show the device off as early as CES 2019 in January, with the first prototype expected to be finished by the end of this year.
