Facebook provides new details about latest security breach

Faccebook data breach

The social networking company disclosed two weeks ago that a security flaw in Facebook's "view as" feature had allowed hackers to see into and potentially take over people's profiles. "We will review the incident carefully and take punitive measures under Korean data laws".

Facebook now says 30 million users - not the 50 million, as originally reported - had their login tokens compromised in a breach discovered last month.

Those 14 million users that had their profile thoroughly mined for personal information are now in grave danger: the attackers can use the information to mount identity theft attacks; extremely targeted phishing attacks via email, SMS, or phone calls; or attempt to hijack their various accounts (the information can come in handy when guessing passwords, answering security questions or impersonating the victim in communications with user support staff).

Josh Constine at TechCrunch points out that users logged into Facebook can visit the site's Help Center and get an immediate answer as to whether their profile was accessed during the breach.

Facebook said Friday that hackers obtained a swath of information from more than 29 million accounts, according to the Associated Press.

Facebook says its investigation is still ongoing. But beyond learning what information the attackers accessed, there's relatively little that users can do-beyond, that is, watching out for suspicious emails or texts.

You will see this message if your account has not been hacked.

The company reports that around 15 million of those accounts had personal information accessed, including username, gender, locale/language, relationship status, religion, hometown, self-reported current city, birthdate, and workplace.

He also noted that people should be aware that their connections on Facebook can leave them open to data harvesting.

Facebook Vice President Guy Rosen told reporters that the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has asked the company to limit descriptions of the attackers due to an ongoing inquiry.

The hackers started their operation by using a set of accounts they controlled, then after that they utilized automated process to access the digital keys for accounts that were in "friendship" with the accounts that they had already brought under control.

Facebook did not say who might have been behind the latest attack or if certain groups of people were targeted, but it said it was working with authorities including the FBI to investigate. "Facebook should provide all those customers free credit monitoring to make sure the damage is minimized". "Usually when you're looking at a sophisticated government operation, then a couple of thousand people hacked is a lot, but they usually know who they're going after".
