Greek FM resigns over dispute on Macedonia name deal

Greek FM resigns, Tsipras to finalise Macedonia deal personally

Head of the small party, sovereign of the Independent Greeks (Anel), Panos Kammenos has always been opposed to the new name of Macedonia.

ATHENS-Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday accepted the resignation of Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and announced he will take over his portfolio.

On one hand, Greece wants to solidify its stance towards Europe in regards to the matter with FYROM and on the other, Tsipras means to show to the members of the cabinet that he will not tolerate any underhanded politics and personal strategies which might endanger Greece's stable course to escape from austerity.

Tsipras also sought to reassure FYROM, which is in the process of debating the agreement in its Parliament, that he fully supports the agreement that will upgrade Greece's worldwide standing, as he said.

Both Tsipras and Zaev have staked major political capital on the name deal, which is strongly promoted by the European Union and the United States, despite strong objections and protests in both of the countries involved.

However, this disagreement risk to bring down the coalition government of Alexis Tsipras, who has only a slight majority. He challenges them when he judges that it will be an advantage for his country.

"The train progresses steadily and will reach its destination".

Implementing a multidimensional and active foreign policy decided by the Prime Minister himself, Nikos Kotzias has achieved tremendous successes in Greek foreign policy, giving prominence to Greece as a pillar of stability and security for the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean by solving chronic problems that Greece's global relations had been beset by for decades.

According to Kathimerini newspaper, aides close to the foreign minister said Kotzias had been "deeply offended" by Kammenos' allegations, although it was not made clear what these were.

The Macedonian parliament is now being discussed by this agreement before it is considered by the Greek parliament.

"There comes a time, as the poem says, where you have to decide whom you will join and whom it is you'll leave", Kotzias tweeted after his resignation. The PM and a number of ministers made their choices during yesterday's cabinet meeting and now I will make mine. 17 the resignation of Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, according to an e-mailed press statement issued from the Premier's office. It's good to remember, however, the lyric: "they tried to bury me deep, they forgot I was a seed".
