InMobi acquires Sprint’s advertising and data analysis unit Pinsight Media

Sprint sells mobile advertising unit to InMobi

InMobi, the India-based mobile marketing and ad technology firm, has bought USA telco Sprint's mobile data and ad subsidiary, Pinsight Media, in an all-stock deal for an undisclosed amount.

The Pinsight sale to InMobi comes as Sprint, the fourth-largest USA wireless carrier by subscribers, awaits regulatory approval on its takeover by rival T-Mobile US. Sprint is now carrying more than $40 billion in debt. The financial terms of the all-stock deal, however, remained undisclosed.

For Naveen Tewari, founde -CEO of InMobi, the deal is part of a larger effort to work more closely with telecommunication companies - the goal being to "leverage the strength of [their] combined data assets", Tewari said on Tuesday. Pinsight Media, meanwhile, offers insight into mobile data through its portfolio of services.

Data on smartphone users are increasingly important as audiences shift their viewing habits to mobile devices and telecom companies build out their media businesses, as demonstrated with AT&T's acquisition of media company Time Warner that closed in June.

The Pinsight Media acquisition will bring better insight through its data management platform to the InMobi Marketing Cloud.

"InMobi is deeply committed to telco partners and building a unique data ecosystem to support our enterprise platform for marketers", said Anurakt Jain, VP and GM, Strategic Data Partnerships at InMobi.

Talking about the partnership, Naveen Tewari, Founder and CEO, InMobi, said, "With this acquisition we are creating the most powerful advertising and marketing platform for the USA market by unifying online and offline behaviour, and providing CMOs with a way to reach and engage consumers, while remaining compliant with privacy and data protection requirements".

"Sprint's partnership with InMobi goes beyond this acquisition", stated Rob Roy, Chief Digital Officer, Sprint.

After the completion of this transaction, InMobi is set to expand its North American operations to Kansas City, alongside the already existing locations in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

This latest deal follows the company's acquisition of AerServ for $90 million, earlier this year, and its more recent partnership with Microsoft.
