Instagram says it will now detect bullying in photos

The new kindness camera

Being under the umbrella of bigwig Facebook, Instagram has received a number of features after Facebook took over it a few years ago.

Writing in a blog post Tuesday, Adam Mosseri said "While the majority of photos shared on Instagram are positive and bring people joy, occasionally a photo is shared that is unkind or unwelcome".

Let's face it: Online bullying has become common with the growing popularity of social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The new feature leverages machine-learning technology to detect bullying in posted photos, captions and comment, before forwarding the information to Instagram's community operations team to review.

Allowing users to report content that potentially violates Instagram guidelines is no longer enough which is why the photo-sharing platform is now using machine learning to proactively detect bullying.

The move will prevent users from posting defamatory notes as photos or images containing obscene, bullying or harassment-inducing content. As well, the company has introduced a new camera effect that it says will help "spread kindness" among users, at least when they're using the Stories feature.

"It will also help us protect our youngest community members since teens experience higher rates of bullying online than others", Mosseri added.

The new function is rolling out now, and is expected to reach all users over the coming weeks.

Additionally, the platform is expanding its bullying comment filter to hide crude comments from the Feed, Explore, and Profile tabs, as well as live videos (above)-"to ensure that Live remains a safe and fun place to authentically connect with your friends and interests", Mosseri wrote.

The company, owned by Facebook, is also launching a "Kindness Camera Effect" in partnership with dancer Maddie Ziegler. "And it's a crucial next step since many people who experience or observe bullying don't report it". You can tag friends, too. In selfie mode, hearts will appear on the screen.
