Iranian border guards kidnapped on border with Pakistan

The Zahedan border between Pakistan and the southeastern Iranian province of Baluchistan

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry later said in a statement that the Pakistani and Iranian militaries were "working to ascertain the whereabouts of Iranian guards", adding that "no effort will be spared" to assist Iran in finding the abducted.

Iranian border guards have repeatedly come under attacks by terror outfits active on the Pakistani soil.

The Iranian military forces along the southeastern border areas are frequently attacked by terrorist groups coming from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Revolutionary Guard, Iran's top security force, said in a statement on Tuesday that some of its members had been kidnapped by an armed group at a border post in the city of Mirjaveh in Sistan-Baluchestan province.

"Both militaries, under a joint mechanism established since past year, are working to ascertain the whereabouts of Iranian guards", the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

Fourteen Iranian border guards were abducted on the border with Pakistan in the early hours of Tuesday, Iran's state-funded Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported, citing an unnamed official. Iranian ambassador to Pakistan Mehdi Honardoost also visited the FO to convey his government's concerns.

Later on Tuesday, General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Guard's ground forces, called for a joint Iranian-Pakistani operation against those behind the abductions. The area, which lies on a major opium trafficking route, has seen occasional clashes between Iranian forces and Baluch separatists, as well as drug traffickers.

The province has always been a flashpoint, with Baluchi separatists and jihadists based in Pakistan regularly attacking Iranian security posts.

Zarif thanked his Pakistani counterpart for his support and underscored Tehran's desire to overcome all hurdles together to maintain peace along the Pak-Iran border.

According to one source, she was informed just ahead of the presentation that she would require fresh credentials signed by the new president in Pakistan Arif Alvi as those signed by his predecessor were no more acceptable.
