Julian Assange sues asylum host Ecuador for violating his ‘fundamental rights’

Assange sues Ecuador for ‘violating fundamental rights & freedoms’ over new set of ‘censure’ rules

WikiLeaks' lawyer, Baltasar Garzon, will be filing a case against the Ecuadorean government for violating the "fundamental rights and freedoms" of WikiLeaks' founder Julian Assange by cutting off his communications with the outside world, the organization wrote on Twitter.

Even in Julian Assange's proud history of alienating his allies, his latest move in the worldwide game of chess played from the relative safety of a backroom in London's Ecuadorean embassy for the past six years was unexpected.

WikiLeaks said the government of Ecuador refused a visit by Human Rights Watch general counsel Dinah PoKempner, who has likened Ecuador's isolation to "solitary confinement", and had not allowed several meetings with his lawyers.

"Ecuador's measures against Julian Assange have been widely condemned by the human rights community", a Wikileaks statement said.

Mr Assange's guests will also have to be previously approved by the embassy, and their private details, including social media usernames and serial numbers of phones and tablets, be revealed to the embassy.

"The move comes nearly seven months after Ecuador threatened to remove his protection and summarily cut off his access to the outside world, including by refusing to allow journalists and human rights organisations to see him, and installing three signal jammers in the embassy to prevent his phone calls and internet access", the WikiLeaks statement read.

WikiLeaks said that United States congressmen had written an open letter to the Ecuador's president, Lenin Moreno, saying that in order to advance "crucial matters from economic co-operation to counternarcotics assistance, to the possible return of a USAID mission to Ecuador, we must first resolve a significant challenge created by your predecessor, Rafael Correa - the status of Julian Assange".

Baltazar says there are no plans to take assange to Russian Federation, despite recent reports that Moscow tried to help him escape to years ago. He still lacks access to the Internet, his lawyer said.

The website reported that the embassy intends to stop paying for Assange's food and medical care in December.

Ecuador in 2017 gave Assange citizenship and named him to a diplomatic post in Russian Federation, but rescinded the latter after Britain refused to give him diplomatic immunity, according to an Ecuadorean government document seen by Reuters.

Pressure has mounted on Ecuador to hand Assange over to the UK, WikiLeaks believes.

Assange sought refuge at the Ecuador Embassy in Knightsbridge in June 2012, having lost an appeal against extradition to Sweden for questioning on allegations of rape and sexual assault that went to the Supreme Court.
