Leonard Cohen Wrote 'Kanye Is Not Picasso' Poem for his New Book

Leonard Cohen and Kanye West

Cohen wrote the poem in March 2015, two years after the rapper declared "I am Picasso".

"Kanye West is not Picasso". I am Basquiat! I am Walt Disney!

Leonard Cohen's newly released posthumous book, The Flame: Poems Notebooks Lyrics Drawings, was released on October 2 and it features a poem titled "Kanye West is not Picasso", throwing shade at the American rapper. "Kanye West is not Edison".

Leonard Cohen aimed his proverbial pen at Kanye West as he crafted a collection of poems in the final months of his life. "I am the Kanye West of Kanye West".

Shannon's gravely drawl is a flawless fit for the boiling prose, and there's something nearly cathartic about hearing him spit out verses like, "I am the Kanye West of Kanye West/ The Kanye West/ Of the great bogus shift of bullshit culture/ From one boutique to another". The poem was reportedly written in 2015, a few days after West compared himself to Michael Jordan in an interview.

And in 2016, backstage at "Saturday Night Live", he was recorded saying he was 50 percent more influential than Picasso, Stanley Kubrick and the apostle Paul - and would remain so for the next 1,000 years, CBS News reported. In the past, he's compared himself to Steve Jobs, Pablo Picasso and more, and of course, his 2016 album was called The Life Of Pablo.

"Jay-Z is not the Dylan of anything. When we are exposed to someone's real experience, it resonates and it invigorates".
