Lindsey Buckingham sues Fleetwood Mac for kicking him out

Fleetwood Mac

As for their choice of intro song that night, Buckingham admitted he was against it, but said Nicks took it the wrong way. He further alleges that "not a single member of the band" called him to share the news despite 43 years of friendship.

Fleetwood Mac made a decision to go their own way from longtime guitarist Lindsey Buckingham.

In an interview with Rolling Stone published yesterday, Buckingham claimed he was sacked from Fleetwood Mac over the phone by the band's manager, Irving Azoff.

The 69-year-old rejoined in 1997 and performed with them until January.

For their part, Fleetwood Mac contend Buckingham was replaced because he wouldn't commit to touring with the band in 2018. Nicks later suggested Buckingham's solo plans forced her and her bandmates to ask him to leave, but Buckingham claims Azoff told him, "Stevie never wants to be on a stage with you again". "And it's not a question that Lindsey has huge amounts of respect and kudos to what he's done within the ranks of Fleetwood Mac and always will", Fleetwood said. Three days later, he discovered the band planned to tour without him. "We have all done things that were not constructive". As much as I adore (and forever will) Lindsey and all his work with FM, I can't help but like what I'm hearing here. "I love you no matter what", he wrote.

But his lawyers say the band members "cut Buckingham off entirely". Us Weekly reports that Buckingham is suing Fleetwood Mac for "breach of fiduciary duty, breach of oral contract, and intentional interference with prospective economic advantage", all in all meaning he believes they did him dirty and he missed out on potential earnings from their current tour because of it.

The band's publicist has not responded to an email seeking comment. It's fairly standard legal procedure to service the complaint to the parties involved, something that neither Mr Buckingham nor his legal counsel have done. They continue, "Which makes one wonder what the true motivations are when servicing press first with a legal complaint before the parties in disputes".

News of the lawsuit comes one day after Buckingham opened up about his firing in an interview with Rolling Stone.

The guitarist and singer, who learned he'd been voted out of the group in a phone call with Mac manager Irving Azoff, insists he is still owed money from the band - and now he's going to court to get it. Is Stevie leaving the band, or am I getting kicked out?'" Buckingham recalled, only to be told that Nicks had given the band "an ultimatum: "Either you go or she's gonna go".
