MACC Has Just Arrested Umno President Zahid Hamidi

Supporters dressed in red a colour associated with Umno gathered as early as 6.30am outside the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex ahead of expected corruption charges against Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

My E.G. Services Bhd (MyEG) fell 2.67% in active trade at mid-morning today after it was named in the charges against former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Following that, Ahmad Zahid, who is Umno president, will face several charges under MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001.

A crowd of supporters turned up outside the court in Kuala Lumpur where he was being charged, waving banners that read "we reject the cruel treatment of our leader".

Ahmad Zahidi was also accused of misusing funds from his family-run charity foundation.

He has denied wrongdoing, saying the payments were made in error by an aide and that he has since repaid the amount.

Each of the 45 charges carries a jail term of up to 20 years, with fines of up to five times the value of the illegal transactions for the money laundering and abuse of power offences.

MACC confirmed that Zahid was arrested at 3.15pm at its headquarters in Putrajaya today.

Zahid, who now heads the opposition Malay party, is the latest notable person after former Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife to face graft charges following the shocking ouster of their coalition in May general elections.

He left some 90 minutes before Dr Ahmad Zahid was scheduled to arrive.

"This action is a strategy to portray Zahid as an untrustworthy and unqualified leader", said Jalaluddin Alias, a member of the party's supreme council.

The group led by the president of Malaysia Baru Observers, Lokman Noor Adam, began assembling from about 8pm.

Sources familiar with the investigation of alleged misappropriation of Yayasan Akal Budi funds said Dr Ahmad Zahid "has a lot of charges to answer".

Earlier, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan urged party members to remain calm.
