Man linked to Saudi prince spotted at consulate before Khashoggi disappearance

US President Donald Trump speaks during a briefing on damage from Hurricane Michael in Macon Georgia

Turkish investigators carried out searches Thursday at the Saudi consulate and the nearby consul's residence in Istanbul in connection with the disappearance of US -based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump denied trying to assist Riyadh in denying their involvement in Khashoggi's death, saying "I just want to find out what's happening".

U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo is in Turkey for talks following a meeting with the Saudi king and the crown prince on Tuesday.

Trump said Wednesday he wants audio and video intelligence from Turkey, "if it exists".

The leaks, a lot of them reported in local pro-government newspapers in Turkey, may provide a clearer picture of what happened over two weeks ago when Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate to obtain documents related to his upcoming marriage to a Turkish woman. Britain says it is "very concerned" about the disappearance of Khashoggi, who was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this month.

Turkish forensic officials arrive to the residence of Saudi Arabia's Consul General Mohammad al-Otaibi in Istanbul, Turkey October 17, 2018.

At around 4.40pm (13:40 GMT) a team of a dozen police and prosecutors, including forensics experts in white overalls entered the residence of the consul, who was at the consulate when the alleged assassination of Khashoggi took place, according to Turkish media.

Turkish police on Monday night also carried out an eight-hour search at the consulate itself, taking away soil and DNA samples. Erdogan said toxic material was found which had been "painted over".

The existence of audio evidence that Mr Khashoggi - a critic of Saudi leaders - was murdered was revealed by Turkish investigators early on in their inquiries.

"This guy has got to go", said Sen.

"Here we go again with, you know, you're guilty until proven innocent", he said. All of the identified individuals have since left Turkey.

"Sooner's better than later for everyone", Pompeo said.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he will decide Thursday whether or not he will attend the conference.

Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund, and a number of high-profile business executives have all backed out of the conference.

"Your recent statements, and public reports of increased spending by the Saudi government at Trump properties, raise significant concerns about financial conflicts of interest", the lawmakers wrote.

Institute director Professor Noel Woodford told the ABC he did not meet the Saudi surgeon during his Australian placement but understood he voiced a particular interest in the field of mass disaster victim identification.

One suspect, Mr Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, was a diplomat assigned to the Saudi embassy in London in 2007, it said, citing a British diplomatic roster. "Any suggestion that I have is just more FAKE NEWS (of which there is plenty)!"
