Man Utd boss Mourinho plots new role for Alexis

Paul Pogba of Manchester United has had a very public falling out with manager Jose Mourinho

Pogba has faced criticism for failing to repeat his impressive performances at the World Cup for United, who have slumped early in the season.

Mourinho's public confirmation that he had erased Pogba from his list of vice-captains highlighted the discord between the United boss and his club record signing, but the midfielder has now offered up what will be viewed as his first public comments on leadership.

The reports of his likely return to Old Trafford on loan has sparked talks on social media, with many appearing to prefer the Swede to Romelu Lukaku in the United line up.

"I think Mourinho has always had quality and a strong character". It puts pressure on the manager.

"Surely sometimes football betrays you, I saw the match against Benitez's Newcastle and I saw a test of character by the team that can be a point of restart. This is his third year, the players know more and more the way he wants to play and how he wants it - so I believe, yes".

"That allows me to relay messages and have the chance to be heard". "This is my opinion and I would have said that to him, I would say "no, that's not something to say because you are not the manager".

Despite taking on a key leadership role at the World Cup, a growing rift between Pogba and Mourinho saw the France worldwide stripped of the United vice-captaincy last month.

He said the France captaincy was not one of his main goals. Yes, I think there are things that should not be done from the players' side and from the manager and above.

'As a leader you can talk on the pitch but I've seen leaders who didn't necessarily talk'. He will be there on the pitch and show you the way.

Prior to the World Cup, Pogba had stated his ambition of stepping up his role within the France squad, and he was credited by teammates with having given a number of inspirational dressing room speeches during Les Bleus' summer triumph.
