Menendez leads in NJ Senate race despite negative views from voters

Women For Menendez Hillary Clinton Liberty Prime

That's a smaller lead than Menendez's advantage in the last poll from the university, released October 3, in which the senator lead Hugin 53-42.

The senator led even as 45 percent of those polled reported unfavorable views of Menendez, though 64 percent saying charges he recently faced on corruption, which were ultimately dropped, are "about the same as what most other politicians do". (The Real Clear Politics average lead for Menendez is 7 points.) But Menendez has lingering negatives from the trial he endured over accusations of corruption.

There are only about 5 percent of voters undecided.

The poll, which surveyed 873 New Jersey likely voters from October 10-16, has a margin of error of +/- 4.3 percentage points. New Jersey voters have a very clear choice: "Do you believe the denials of corrupt, career politician Bob Menendez and convicted felon Salomon Melgen, or do you believe the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Obama Justice Department?"

The new poll may spell disaster for Democrats hoping to retake the Senate this November, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer vowing to repeal the GOP "tax scam" in the solidly blue state of New Jersey.

Salera noted that his group's counterpart, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, had previously said it would spend $1 million supporting Menendez. "So perhaps the goalposts have been moved nationwide in recent years". The margin of error is 4.3 percent.
